GTF PEOPLE: THE REUNION

THE GANTIMPALA THEATER PEOPLE! "THE ORIGINAL ONES!!!!

a highlight scene from "kanser 2017: the novel"

a scene from "kanser 2017: the novel"

A tradition will always be a TRADITION...

Adapted from the novel of our National Hero,  this classic play will withstand the tests of TIME

a FIGHT for our country's freedom, souls coming back to let the YOUTHS remember...

The right values, the unjust oppression, and the continuing HOPE.

That's what KANSER 2017: THE NOVEL offers...

Imagine the KIDS, doing some acrobatic kicks and turns and jumps

So happy to see the true images of their roots and suffeings in the past-, .... now redeemed.

Crazy in some ways

But hopeful, in the end...

With lovers outcasted

And a rebel about to die.

Choose the heart of a sincere Filipino identity.

And this time around, the Millenial kids can relate and identify.

The updated version of the classic play, based on the novel Noli Me Tangere shall prove...

all the more.

That GANTIMPALA THEATER FOUNDATION

will CONTINUE teaching the young-

what is it to become a FILIPINO....

FOREVER.

PAUL JAKE PAULE as ELIAS in "KANSER 2017: THE NOVEL"....

PAUL: DEBONAIRE AND HANDSOME

PAUL JAKE PAULE IS ONE OF THE MOST TALENTED THEATER ACTORS WE HAVE NOW. HE HAD PLAYED A VARIETY OF WIDE ROLES IN MANY STAGE PLAYS FROM DIFFERENT THEATER GROUPS. BUT HIS HOME BASE, REALLY, IS GANTIMPALA THEATER FOUNDATION.

RECENTLY, HE PORTRAYED THE MAIN LEAD CHARACTER IN GTF'S "FLORANTE AT LAURA"), AND THIS TIME AROUND, ASIDE FROM "FLORANTE AT LAURA", DIREK FRANNIE ZAMORA CASTED HIM AS ELIAS IN "KANSER 2017: THE NOVEL".

"THE MOMENT THAT BABYPUFF TOLENTINO, DIREK FRANNIE'S PRODUCTION MANAGER IN THE PLAY, ASKED ME IF I CAN PORTRAY THE ROLE OF ELIAS, I SAID YES IMMEDIATELY", PAUL JAKE TOLD A BLOGGER. "IT'S SUCH AN HONOR TO BE DIRECTED BY DIREK FRANNIE."

MEANWHILE, PAUL JAKE IS ALSO INTO DIRECTING. HE IS THE DIRECTOR OF THE CRITICALLY-ACCLAIMED "HAPPINESS IS A PEARL" (WRITTEN BY RODY VERA) BY THEIR NEWLY-FORMED THEATER COMPANY- ARTIST'S PLAYGROUND. AND FOR HIM, DIRECTING THIS PLAY IS ONE BIG CHALLENGE TO HIS ARTISTRY AS A PERSON.

"I CAN SAY NOW, I ENJOY THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS", PAUL JAKE SAID IN THE END. "DIRECTING AND ACTING ARE BOTH REWARDING FOR ME. I COULDN'T ASK FOR MORE!"

CATCH PAUL JAKE AS ELIAS IN "KANSER 2017: THE NOVEL"!!!! VERY SOON.

francis matheu: on the rebound

francis: physically REBOUNDING

FRANCIS: EXPERIMENTING AS AN ACTOR

REBOUNDS. that's what's been happening lately on the life of one good theater actor by the name of Francis Matheu. Rebounds, in the sense that he's out to do a lot more, change strategies, set changes and moving on FORWARD.

Rebounds, too, in the sense that he's rediscovering his works, reinventing his self, transforming and BECOMING.

Just like now, in his come-back for the play KANSER 2017: THE NOVEL by Gantimpala Theater Foundation, he's out to portray an entirely different but more meaningful character. If last year he played the role of ELIAS in the mild musical version of the classic play, this time, there's a big TURN AROUND.

"I am portraying the character of Padre Damaso!", Francis to a blogger. "And I am so happy that direk Frannie Zamora entrusted me for this role. And in order for me to effectively deliver the role, I went out of my way to study the ways and means of old priests living back then in the 18th century. I even went to the corner stones of the Walls in Intramuros to feel the jibe and the aura of what was it like at that period of time. It was the Spanish occupation that our play Kanser was set in. So I imagined and put myself in that situation- that's how I really work and internalized for this great character of Padre Damaso."

And that's the kind of REBOUND we badly wanted for Francis. A great REBOUND, that is. In case Francis didn't know yet, the role of Padre Damaso was very much wanted by other veteran actors. Vince Tanada of Philippine Stagers Foundation wanted to portray that role, alongside with Norman Penaflorinda and others. But direk Frannie Zamora opted Francis to portray the role of Padre Damaso, because he knew, how experimental Francis could be.

"This play is the history of Filipino people", Francis suddenly changed the topic and reaction. "It's about displacement and making Filipinos the second class citizens of their own country. I guess, it's such an honor for me to be a part of this revolutionary play written by Dr. Jose Rizal in his book Noli Me Tangere and transformed into a play by playwright Jomar Fleras. Because you see, one of my main crusades now is to establish the true Filipino identity."

YES. That's why now, on Francis' own theater group called the TwinBill Theater Company, Filipiniana motiff is on the offspring.

"We're now preaparing a lot for our next theater season at Twin Bill", Francis continued saying. "It's gonna be a new brand for our company. A new process, too. And we're gonna be having a soft launching about it soon. Our teaser starts with the letter P".

"P" as in PILIPINO? Your gues is as good as ours. But as of press time, Francis is not yet revealing anything.

"All I can say is, it's a brand that would cater to Filipino plays for Twin Bill theater production", Francis said in the end. "A total rebound from twin Bill has been offering in the past- like our socially-relevant plays. I want the Filipino culture to be the center of our brand this time around."

Yup, we say again and again. Francis Matheu is on the REBOUND....

Amidst

FOREVER.

joel molina: the INTELLEGENT actor and the more INTENSE crisostomo ibarra...

JOEL: THE PERFECT "IBARRA"

JOEL IN ONE OF HIS TV COMMERCIALS

FLASHBACK: It was the year 2014 when Joel Molina first portrayed the role of Crisostomo Ibarra in the classic play Kanser. He was also directed by Frannie Zamora at that time. And for one blogger who watched Joel perform the 'character', we guessed, it was the best Crisostomo Ibarra portrayal that he had ever seen.
An intellegent actor and a more intense Crisostomo Ibarra- that's Joel Molina for you. And for us, the Ibarra that would linger.... FOREVER.

BACK TO THE PRESENT:

There was Joel again, after three years of absence in the theater scene- and now back, to portray Crisostomo Ibarra again, rehearsing for the most delicate scenes of the updated version of Kanser 2017: The Novel, with performance dates coming up by the month of September.

Joel made many people cried in one rehearsal scene- that scene wherein he was embracing Maria Clara (performed by Dea Formacil) in one bidding and farewell dramatic highlight.

"I just don't know why I cry so hard in that farewell scene", Joel told a blogger. "I don't really know if I am relating or what. Basta, I am being carried-away lang. Because it's so dramatic and heavy. That scene wherein I was saying my goodbye to Maria Clara. Wow, it's so heavy for me. I was feeling it too much."

Even this blogger shed tears on that rehearsal performance by Joel. He was on a "performance-level" kind of acting already, even though it was just a rehearsal. And others who watched, also cried.

"I never wanted them to cry, but thanks anyway, I made them cry", Joel continued saying. "You see, according to direk Frannie Zamora, our play Kanser 2017: The Novel  is basically a love story between Ibarra and Maria Clara. That's why on my scenes with Maria Clara, I simply become so emotional."

Joel also added that he'll do a different interpretation of the Ibarra character this time, compared to that of his performance three years ago.

"This time, Ibarra is going to be more Millenial, more relating to the youths", Joel told a blogger again. "As per direk Frannie's advice, I'll gonna present the character of Ibarra in movements na ginagamit ng mga Millenial kids. Well, that's a big challenge on my part. Ibarra, the classic character varies, according to time and space."

Anyway, Joel has been busy appearing in many TV commercials and print ads- so numerous of them and he could no longer count them. He's also busy appearing some special events, most recently was in Tacloban City wherein he appeared in one big event with a Korean Pop Star.

"But theater acting is one of my passions that's why I kept on coming back to acting in the theater", Joel said in the end. "It's more captivating and releasing to the spirit, likewise, to my artistry as a person. And portraying a character that our National Hero- Dr. Jose Rizal had created, wow, I am so blessed to portray it twice in my career as an actor. I just hope I could deliver the much-needed justice in portraying it."

And we guarantee, Joel, you will be nominated on next year's Aliw Awards as Best Actor. We bet our ass on it.

JOEL REHEARSING WITH ACTRESS DEA FORMACIL THE MOST DRAMATIC SCENE IN THE PLAY "KANSER 2017: THE NOVEL"

JOEL: THE "MILLENIAL" IBARRA"

DEA FORMACIL: A MORE DARING AND STRONGER "MARIA CLARA"....

DEA: AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT "MARIA CLARA"

Looking more deeper at theater actress Dea Formacil, you could entirely feel that she has a class of her own. Acting with finesse and style, Dea also exudes MYSTERY and AWE, a perfect mixture of definitions and feminism that could pass as being 'one Maria Clara'.

"I wanna portray a stronger Maria Clara, not the weak one", Dea told a blogger during one intermission break at the rehearsals of Kanser 2017: The Novel. "But I will maintain her great love for Crisostomo Ibarra- because that's what the play Kanser was all about.

"It's high time for them to see a stronger Maria Clara", Dea further continued saying. "Kasi, lagi na lang napapagsamantalahan ang kahinaan naming mga babae. I want to bring out this time the stronger side of Maria Clara via this updated version of Kanser. I just hope that people can accept this time a non-traditional Maria Clara. There are still lots of people kasi out there who doesn't want to see changes. And I guess, I wanna change that mind set."

Dea also told a blogger who interviewed her that Maria Clara also fought on her own to save lives in the novel based upon the play Kanser. And that was the novel Noli Me Tangere of Dr. Jose Rizal.

"When she entered the convent, that was the time she fought", came Dea's defense on her character of Maria Clara. "She didn't actually committed suicide inside the convent. It was another female character on the novel who committed suicide, not Maria Clara. While inside the convent, Maria Clara continued fighting- for her country and for the greatest man she ever loved- Crisostomo Ibarra."

Meanwhile, Dea felt so proud and happy being directed by her friend, Frannie Zamora in this play.

"What's so good about direk Frannie, he gives you freedom to explore more and wider upon the character you are portraying", Dea said again. "He doesn't dictate or spoon-feed to you on what you're going to do. He lets you invent it on your own- and that, I found out, was more challenging on my capacity as an actress.

"I started it out working with direk Frannie during our Laguna theater days", Dea continued saying. "And eversince, he was always caring and loving as a friend. A very sincere person, too. He has a kind heart and a pure love for his craft. We can manage to separate friendship from work. And that's the best."

And one last set of words from Dea, what's Kanser all about, in her own feelings?

"Napakahalaga ng sinulat na ito ni Dr. Jose Rizal", Dea said in the end. "It tells about the persistence and undying spirit of us, Filipinos. The fight for freedom and liberty. The manipulating power of the rich and powerful. But because of love, one woman by the name of Maria Clara struggled on and inspired one man to carry on. This is our fight, this is our love!"

Very well said, Dea.
