MICHAEL: A POP ARTIST, MORE THAN A THEATER ACTOR

"There's so many conflicts", Jobert Sucaldito, manager of Michael Pangilinan, started saying when a blogger visited him at his radio program. "It was a hard decision for both of us, but I feel, it's but fair for us to back out of the theater project.

"You see, Robert, Michael lives in Commonwealth Avenue", Jobert continued saying. "And the venue of the rehearsals are going to be at Rockwell in Makti. He should be there by 9 a.m., according to direk Joel Lamangan. That's going to be very madugo for Michael. The traffic along Commonwealth is heavy in the morning. Michael will need a lot of rushing and he's going to panic, it will be so hard for him. It's next to impossible. And I know direk Joel, he commands professionalism, lalo na sa rehearsals ng play niya. He doesn't want anyone to be late!

"So, me and Michael talked a lot about that. We both decided to back-out na lang. In respect to all the theater artists he's gonna work with, he doesn't want to ruin the rehearsals. In fairness, the Gantimpala people understood our dilemma. They didn't take it against Michael."

And Jobert gave us a sigh of relief. It was a pressure on his part finally taken out.

"I can breathe a lot now", Jobert said. "Michael was really hesitant right from the start. And I do understand him better now."

MICHAEL FURTHER LOOKS UP AMIDST BACKING-OUT

MICHAEL: A HARD DECISION TO MAKE

Meanwhile, Michael's girlfriend in person of Garie Concepcion, supports Michael's decision.

"I don't mingle with his career because I have a separate career of my own", Garie said to a blogger. "It's his manager's task to decide. But I support Michael's decision of backing out of the theater project. He knows what's best for him."

The last time this blogger saw Michael, he was really nervous about the theater project. He was honest to say that. And now, Michael feels a lot better.

"I am no longer worried", Michael said to a blogger in a separate occasion. "I do not want to offend direk Joel Lamangan when I come-out late in the rehearsals. According to Nay Jobert, he really gets mad to late people. I respect direk Joel a lot, so to avoid any conflicts with him, I backed-out of the project."

This blogger still has to talk to either direk Jun Pablo or direk Frannie Zamora (Gantimpala theater people and officers) about their reactions on Michael's backing-out of the play Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag. Direk Joel Lamangan, meanwhile, is currently busy to comment.

"I am more of a POP artist than a theater actor", Michael said in the end. "I am so happy that theater people wants me and loves me. But I belong to a different world, and that's all I can say."

Starting by the month of July, according to Michael Pangilinan's manager- Jobert Sucaldito, pop singer/theater actor Michael Pangilinan will start rehearsing for the musical play of Gantimpala Theater Foundation- the theater version of the old classic film Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag.

Michael is now deep into fully researching the male lead character- that, of a provincial boy who called himself Julio and drifted into the dark streets of Manila, trying to save the love of his life- a woman named Ligaya.

"He already watched the film many times", Jobert told a blogger. "He never knew how hard the character was. But I told him to keep on, carry on. He's quite nervous, very nervous."

And Jobert also warned Michael that his director in this musical play- in person of master film director Joel Lamangan- is strict in ways and professionalism.

"I told him to be punctual once the rehearsals start", Jobert said again. "I don't want direk Joel to be disappointed on him. Michael was direk Joel's one and only choice to portray the character of Julio in this musical play version of the classic film."

When the blogger bumped into Michael in one showbiz event, the "hesitant theater actor" told us these:

"I know who I am and I know my limitations", Michael told a blogger. "But with God's help, I know I can carry on. Please wish me luck- for me to deliver my job."

Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag will be staged by the month of September. Other theater greats will join the cast. And definitely, this is one of the finest moments to wait on the theater scene.

Halos mapaiyak ang isang blogger nang makita nitong karga-karga ni Michael Pangilinan ang pinakamamahal niyang baby boy (anak) sa isang pribadong pagkakataon na tanging si Michael at ang blogger na iyon lamang ang nakakaalam. Witness din ang manager ni Michael Pangilinan na walang iba kundi si Jobert Sucaldito sa pribadong "moment" na iyon. Dahil doon namin napatunayan na mahal na mahal nga ni Michael ang kanyang anak. Pero nakiusap ito sa amin na huwag na lang isulat iyon dahil lumalabas na parang ginagamit niya ang kanyang anak para sa publicity. Na hindi naman ganoon talaga. Sadyang expressive lang si Michael sa pagmamahal niya sa kanyang anak.

It's been a very sentimental and rewarding journey for singer Michael Pangilinan in the year 2016. A lot of memories had transpired. Mostly happy memories, and just a few sad ones. But what matters most, Michael proved to everyone that he's worthy to be loved... and admired.

"I guess, the only sad thing that will haunt my memory this year is my son's absence on my last birhday concert", Michael told a blogger-friend. "How I wanted him to be there and embrace me. But it did not happen because some people did not want him to be with me. yes, I cried at that birthday concert of mine. And I am still wishing to see him most each day, hug him, kiss him."

Yet, even though that Michael did not have it all, his career in the year 2016 zoomed-up higher. His artistry shone to the max. His image to the public was par excellance.

"Just recently, I was praised by channel 2 executives who watched my musical play at Ballet Philippines", Michael continued saying. "They even watched my show, most especially Mam Charo Santos-Concio. It was a very artistic endeavor on my part, as I was almost flying with ropes and harnesses in most of my dancing scenes there. It's my first time to do acrobatic dances while singing, but it's all worth it."

His last birthday concert was a huge success, too. He was supported there by lots of singers and comedians and artists, and he felt so flattered by the outcome.

"They all showed to me that they're happy with what I'm doing and achieving", Michael said. "Thanks to my manager, Jobert Sucaldito, for doing all his best for my career. As much as I would want to be simply a Pop singer, offers just kept on coming that challenged my artistic capabilities."

Yes, sincerely Michael. And on the coming new year of 2017, January 7 to be exact, Michael will again do what he loves doing, actually. And that is, POP. Via his forthcoming concert at the Music Museum entitled "Sincerely Yours, Michael".

"I will appear in the concert together with Ms. Aiai delas Alas and Arnell Ignacio", Michael said. "It's my first time to sing in a concert with them, so this is something new for me. I do respect and admire them a lot and I feel so humbled by their participation on my concert. Aside from singing, me, Aiai and Arnell will make people laugh hard in my forthcoming concert."

Early this year pa lamang ay nalaman o nahulinigan na namin ang proyektong ito. Na tunay naman naming ikinagalak at ikinatuwa. Kay direk Frannie Zamora, isa sa mga respetadong direktor ng teatro sa Gantimpala Theater Foundation, una naming nalaman ang balitang ito. Pero sabi ni direk Frannie nuon sa amin, tahimik na lang muna at huwag ipagkalat ang proyektong dula na iyon na kung saan ay muli daw nilang kukunin ang serbisyo ni Michael Pangilinan bilang bidang aktor doon at ang magdidirek ng dula ay walang iba kundi si Joel Lamangan, ang mismong Artistic Director ng Gantimpala.

Opo, ito ang proyektong Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag (The Musical). Bale pagsasa-dula iyon ng klasikong pelikula ni Lino Brocaka (isang National Artist for Film na yumao nuong Dekada 1980's). Isang napakagandang proyekto, na hindi man natin masasabing komersyal ang dating (dahil karamihan sa mga Young Millenials ngayon ay hindi na alam ang klasikong pelikulang Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag), makapagdudulot naman ng kakaibang sigla at lalim sa muli, sa mundo ng teatro at pagtatanghal.

Naaalala pa namin, nuong mabanggit namin ito kay Jobert Sucaldito early this year, naging tuliro agad ang isipan at diwa ng pamosong manager na iyon ni Michael Pangilinan. Sabi pa ni Jobert nuon sa blogger na ito:

"Naku, Robert, ang hirap gawin niyan, hindi ko agad masasabi sa iyo kung kaya namin ni Micahel na gawin iyan!", sabi pa ni Jobert nuon na tila umaarte lang sa aming harapan. "Pero flattered ako at si Michael ang gusto nila para diyan. But I can not commit at this point in time. Michael is fully-booked until the year 2017!"

But that was early this year pa of 2016. Along the way, a lot of things have changed. At tila umubra ang kakaibang "convincing power" ni direk Joel Lamangan (sino ba naman ang hindi tatanggi sa magaling na direktor na ito?) para sa mga taong involved sa career ni Michael. Kaya naman nu'ng matagal naming makatabi at makapiling si direk Joel sa Full Force concert ng Gantimpala sa The Library, month of October this year, sinugurado na ni direk Joel sa amin na tuloy na ang dulang Maynila: Sa Mga Kuko Ng Liwanag, at nag-commit na rin daw sa kanya si Michael Pangilinan.

"Oo, Robert, tuloy na tuloy na talaga ang Maynila", sinigurado iyon sa amin ni direk Joel. "Yan ang next project na gagawin ko sa Gantimpala. At si Michael Pangilinan talaga ang first and last choice ko para gumanap sa papel ni Bembol Rocco sa klasikong pelikula na iyon na gagawin kong isang musical play this time."

Tailor-made daw kasi para kay Michael ang role nung bidang lalaki roon. Walang iba pa na puwedeng gumanap roon, aside from Michael and Bembol Rocco (we mean, the young Bembol Rocco).

Nang makausap naman ng isang blogger si Michael sa nagdaang birthday concert niya sa Rajah Sulayman Park, tila nakitaan ng nerbyos si Michael.

"Kinakabahan po ako, first time akong maidi-direk ni Joel Lamangan, kaya talagang nakaka-nerbyos po!", sabi ni Michael sa blogger na iyon. "Sa totoo lang po, ayaw ko na sanang gumanap pang muli sa isang stage play dahil mas at home ako bilang isang singer lang, pero si Nanay Jobert, hindi raw niya matanggihan sina direk Joel at ang Gantimpala. Kaya sige po, gagalingan ko na lang and I hope, I won't fail their expectations."

Abangan na lang natin ang mga susunod pang kabanata. Michael Pangilinan always offers us great surprises. Hindi ba?
