Director Topel Lee exactly knew what he was doing, despite the many inconsistencies in the film Baklad,- one of the official film entries in the recently-concluded TOFARM Film Festival. He offered a mixture of ingredients that were somehow confusing and shocking- but his intentions were honest and correct- in delivering a film that simply justified the means and the end.
The film Baklad justly offered a multi-dimensional experience- at the start, to the character portrayed by Ronwaldo Martin, in the middle- he showed no sound on the POV ("point of view") character of Elora Espano, and in the end,- back to the first-dimensional character of Ronwaldo.
In an Alternative Cinema of pure and honest visions, you won't elaborate any further. You would leave it up to the audience to interpret your own style of film making. You won't be much loyal to the plot, much more in the story. Everything must be implied.
The character of Rafa Siguion-Reyna in this film simply revealed that in indie films like these, too much drama is no longer necessary. But his character was the most beautiful character in the film. Of sacrificing his own life and taking his own life in the end because he no longer had any hope left in life- but saved the character of his friend because he saw there's still hope in it.
Baklad could have not been PERFECT. Yes, definitely not. As compared to the other five film entries in this year's TOFARM Film Festival - it was not as "flawless" as what the others seemed. It had technical errors in sound and light, but nevertheless, only the director knew why he had to do that. Let's give respect to his "style" in making and presenting this film.
Furthermore, the film offered a universal message of hope and love. Of deaths and sacrifices. In a tiny world far beyond the depths of a lake, that you can find still- a love that's caring and a bondage of TWO, - out to become a FAMILY.
And as portrayed by the two leading actors- Ronwaldo Martin and Elora Espano who both delivered subtle but excellent performances (others in the cast gave much effort in their acting skills that became a "turn-off")- and they both simply used their eyes and gentle ways- oh, my, they're both a TREASURE to reckon with in the field of acting genre.

With its surprise frame ending of two young gay couple caring for each other's wounds and hugging, the film simply implied that it was never a dark world out there in a world of realism and dangerous lakes...
that LOVE
could be present
ANYWHERE, and
FOREVER.
