FILMMAKER PROFILE: Born in Aparri, Cagayan, JANINA GACOSTA grew up thinking that Metro Manila is from a different dimension. She thought that snow fell there partially because of the film “Puso ng Pasko,” starring Jolina Magdangal. After graduating with a degree in Communication Arts in UST, she is currently taking up MA Media Studies in Film at UP Diliman. She has joined various writing workshops including Ricky Lee Scriptwriting Workshop, CinePanulat: Screenwriting Lab ni Jun Lana, and the VLF Writing Fellowship Program. She continues to join writing workshops until she realizes there is no snow in Manila.
CHESKA MARFORI took up a degree which she thought would help with her shyness. In the process, she fell in love with the art of storytelling and continues to improve her craft at the University of the Philippines. She joined the Screenwriting Lab ni Jun Lana in 2015. Hailed from Liliw, Laguna, her mother once bought a pair of floral slippers for her, but she didn’t like it. She’d rather go barefoot.

FILMMAKERS’ STATEMENT:
ANG GASGAS NA PLAKA NI LOLO BERT
By Janina Gacosta AND Cheska Marfori
"As a storyteller, it is our responsibility to push narratives about people whose voices are suppressed by society. Since the HIV/AIDS epidemic during the 80s, people infected with the disease have been stigmatized and discriminated against. It is important to challenge these thoughts, condemn hate and transform them into love and acceptance. More than raising awareness and battling ignorance, it is my primary goal to tell a story that speaks about love and explores the humanity of people who are living with HIV/AIDS. This story is about two people who have been treated as an outcast because of their identity and condition. As a result, they lose faith in themselves. A film can only do so much but I hope this story sparks a message of hope to every person stigmatized with the condition. I want them to know that having this condition is not a death sentence. They deserve to love and be loved. They deserve a life treated with respect, a life that allows them to become their fullest selves."
