"DEEPER INSIDE THE EYES": TEXT COVERAGE ON THE CINEMALAYA 16 PRESSCON LAUNCH

THE 'SPIRITS' OF CINEMALAYA 16

"There's more to this than meets the eye".

The everlasting phrase above, once more, was almost as synonymous as to this year's Cinemalaya 16, which had its Press Conference launch last July 15- via ZOOM, in a rather virtual kind of dimension and reality.

The feeling and the excitement continued to be there, amazingly, as more than 80 panelists, participants and media people all hanged-up together in a Webinar, watched the videos, listened to the speeches, and participated in the Question & Answer portion.

It's almost like MAGIC. The 'spirit' never did leave, as it went deeper inside the eyes. For this time, even without the personal touches, hugs and kisses or any Face-To-Face meetings, amidst the lack of colors, lights, music and echoes- the Panelists made a way to excite you back again.

The smiles of those young short film makers as the little frames in the Zoom Webinar popped-in and out, the warm chat messages that suddenly appears on the screen, the little acknowledgements and the penetrating words of the Panelists that inspired you back again to continue loving the Cinema, no matter how short the film would be in this year's Cinemalaya- Oh, wow.  Indeed, we stressed upon, it's more exciting than it sounded.

The huge media supporters for Cinemalaya 16, doubled-up the fun and the positivity. The likes of Ms. Crispina Belen, Lhar Santiago, Nestor Cuartero, Julianito Villasanta, viral media influencer Dennis T. Sebastian and more, more, more. It further proved the WORTH and the VALUE of a rare film festival like this one. A festival that fought its way on, amidst the Covid-19 attitude of quitting and succumbing- it swayed upon the leaves and the flowers and further on ignited the unique kind of "Cinemalaya soul".

Thanks to the Panelists, the Cultural Center of the Philippines P.R. people, the untiring efforts of Mr. Arsenio 'Nick' Lizaso, Chris Millado, Laurice Guillen and Mr. Jose Javier Reyes, plus others more. They battled-on the negativity, the criticisms, the 'crabs' and the wrongs. Cinemalaya 16, now turning to be a handsome young man in his teens, reaches Puberty with braver results.

Because it was there, on the Harbour Square of the CCP Complex, in the very waters of the Manila Bay, that we once saw three young men throwing stones upon the waters. A vision of "free-spirited and artistic souls" communicating and playing upon the bay.

It were the EYES who saw it. It were our own very eyes who knows how feel and how to love.

On succeeding separate blog features about Cinemalaya 16, you'd know more about the short films and the other highlights of the film festival.

In the meantime, the eyes still saw it through.

No matter how "untouched", no matter if these kind of ILLUSIONS were really REAL as you gazed upon the Zoom screen.

Seeing your colleagues there interacting, catching upon the glances of veteran film directors as Panelists, feeling hopeful for these crop of fresh and raw short film makers.

Splendid, superb, magnificent.
