Ang isang magaling na direktor ay may kakaibang mata at puso para makalikha ng isang sining pampelikula. Maaaring ang mga mata niya ay tulad ng isang ibon na malawak ang paningin- at buhat sa itaas, nakikita niya ang lahat. O dili kaya, isang Peeping Tom na maski nakasilip lang sa isang maliit na butas, ay, - nagmamarka, nakadarama...

Ang puso rin ng isang direktor ay malambot, hindi matigas. Madali itong magdugo, madali ring makihalo sa anumang sangkap na ilalagay dito. Dahil ang puso ng isang direktor- ito ay tunay na kakaiba.

Unang kita pa lang namin kay direk Arnel Felix almost two years ago sa pabolosong lugar na Cultural Center of the Philippines, naramdaman na namin na taglay niya ang mga kalidad ng isang tunay na direktor. Mula sa malayo, madarama mo ang respeto mo sa kanya. At lalo mong mamahalin at aakapin ang pagiging mapagkumbaba niya sa pakikisalamuha at pakikipag-ugnayan sa mga tao. Ito ang gustong-gusto naming kalidad ni direk Arnel.

"Kaya nagpapasalamat ako't nabigyan ako ng break bilang isa sa mga estudyante ni Carlos Siguion-Reyna at finalist sa GAWAD CCP Para Sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video nuong taong 2015", bungad na wika sa amin ni direk Arnel sa isang nakakabusog na lunch treat sa Karate Kid restaurant. "Bale kami ang first batch of students and finalists doon. Ang mga nakasama ko, pawang mga taga-channel 7! Mga creative people ng channel 7! Ako lang ang nag-iisang naligaw na hindi taga-channel 7 at napabilang pa ako sa mga finalists. Ang short film na isinali ko roon ay iyong Te Amo, at naging maganda naman ang feedback ng short film ko na iyon. Naisali ko pa 'yun sa San Francisco International Film festival", anya pa.

Kaya naman ngayon, may "recall" na sa mga tao ang pangalang direk Arnel Felix. Isang direktor. Isang true-blooded artist. Pero paano ba niya mabibigyan ng deskripsyon ang pagiging isang direktor niya?

"I just want to be flexible, I want to be known more as a versatile director more than anything else", mabilis namang naging tugon ni direk Arnel sa katanungan habang kumakain ang isang blogger ng Fish Bento sa Karate Kid. "Ayoko kasing i-limit ang sarili ko sa paggawa ng isnag klase ng genre lamang. Gusto kong masubukan ang lahat- comedy, drama, action, fantasy.... Hindi ko talaga nililimitahan ang sarili ko.

"Basta ako, hindi ako naghihintay ng big break na darating- kung may dumating man", patuloy pang sabi ni direk Arnel. "As a director, ibibigay ko lamang kung ano'ng kailangan nila. Mas gusto ko ngayon ang makatulong. Ang makapag bigay ng aking knowledge o kakayahan sa mga baguhang gustong mag-artista."

Kaya itinayo ngayon ni direk Arnel ang kanyang SpyGlass Acting Workshop. Nagsimula na itong gumiling at magpapatuloy pa sa mga susunod na linggo at buwan. Sa Acting Workshop na ito, hindi lang basta matututong umarte ang isang baguhang artista, kundi magiging BIDA pa siya sa isang short film na isu-shoot mismo sa workshop niya, at ang short film din na iyon ang magsisilbing demo reel niya at acting credential. Tuhog na tuhog, di ba?

"Patterned yan sa Hollywood", sabi pa ni direk Arnel. "Kasi doon sa Hollywood, lahat ng artista ay may demo reel. Yun ang pinapakita nila sa mga direktor na interesadong kumuha sa kanila. At ganyan ang approach ko sa acting workshop ko."

Ipo-post din ni direk Arnel sa YouTube ang mga short films na iyon at magiging viral. Kaya sinumang sasali sa acting workshop ni direk Arnel, tiyak na makikilala.

Samantala, maraming proyektong nakatakdang gawin si direk Arnel. Isa na rito ang documentary na isu-shoot pa niya sa bansang Israel. Balak din niyang gumawa ng isang full-length film someday.

"Basta may mata ka at puso hindi malayong makamtan mo ang mga pangarap mo bilang isang film artist", pagtatapos na wika pa ni direk Arnel Felix.

CCP Arthouse Cinema presents taboo films and award-winning animation this June

"CCP Arthouse Cinema presents taboo films and award-winning animation this June"

THE CCP Arthouse Cinema will screen four films that deal with the dark side of humanity, curated collectively as Taboo: Unwholesome Films, on June 8, 2017, 3p.m., at the CCP Tanghalang Manuel Conde.

The film selection includes "Alpas" by Jayson Santos, which questions what happens to a pretty corpse before it gets embalmed; and "Ika-3 Putahi" by Joe Bacus, giving a culinary delight served with mucho gusto while telling you why one should not covet thy best friend's girlfriend.

The third film, "Kita Tayo" by Arnie Valdez, warns about whom you should befriend in social media through the experience of a poor naïve barrio lass, while the last film, "Dinuguan" by Khavn de la Cruz, is a delectable stew made from ingredients taken from the three previous short films and served with soothing mood music a la Khavn.

Curated by Teddy Co, Taboo films depict subject matters usually forbidden in polite conversation. Often called midnight movies because of their mature contents, these touch on taboos and transgressions that are part of the human condition, but only tangentially discussed in art. Taboo: Unwholesome Films screening is strictly for adults only.

After the screening of the films, a resource person together with the filmmakers will have a conversation with the audience to discuss the films and gain more insights on this film genre.

Meanwhile, there will be a back-to-back screening of the past winners of Animahenasyon, a competition organized by the Animation Council of the Philippines, Inc. (ACPI), and the animation category winners of the Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video on June 29, at 2p.m. and 5 p.m., respectively.

Established in 1987, the Gawad Alternatibo is considered the longest-running independent film and video competition of its kind in the ASEAN/Asian region. Gawad Alternatibo annually cites the best efforts of Pinoy filmmakers in four categories – Animation, Experimental, Documentary and Short Feature. Many of today’s outstanding filmmakers and media practitioners are alumni of Gawad Alternatibo.

Not to be missed is the celebratory screenings for the Centennial of Philippine Cinema, headed by the Society of Filipino Archivists for Film (SOFIA). The film archivists organization undertakes a three-year celebration, beginning 2017 until 2019, featuring various film screenings, forums, poster exhibits, workshops, silent film contest and other related events.

The celebration hopes to mark the start of Philippine Cinema as an art form in the country. Some historians, including the late Hammy Sotto who was the CCP’s first director of its Coordinating Center for Film, declared in the CCP Encyclopedia of Philippine Art that it was 1919 when a full-fledged Filipino film was screened, while others such as archivist Ernie de Pedro argued that it was in 1917. However, Presidential Proclamation 448 stated that “Philippine cinema’s advent dates back to 1919 when the first full-length, 100% Filipino-capitalized and produced, 35mm film 'Dalagang Bukid' was exhibited in the country.”

To kickstart the celebration, there will be a screening Cine/Sine by Nick Deocampo, as well as the documentary "Film During American Occupation", on June 10, 2017, 3p.m., also at Tanghalang Manuel Conde.

PHSA’S 40TH ANNIVERSARY AT CCP

"PHSA’S 40TH ANNIVERSARY AT CCP"

TO commemorate the Philippine High School for the Arts’s history and legacy of art education to the Filipino youth, the CCP, in cooperation with the PHSA and the PHSA Ibarang Alumni Association will present a multidisciplinary production entitled “PHSA@40: Ibarang Alumni at the Forefront of Arts Education” on June 10, 2017, 2:30 P.M. at the CCP Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater). This show aims to highlight significant contributions of Ibarang Alumni in art education in the various art forms.

Established on June 11, 1977, PHSA is the only art-oriented secondary school in the country. It is located at the National Arts Center in Mt. Makiling, College, Los Baños, Laguna. PHSA graduates are called Ibarang, a coined word referring to a legendary tribe of Filipino artists.

The PHSA Ibarang Alumni Association Inc. believes that it is fitting to officially launch and publicize PHSA’s 40th anniversary celebrations at the CCP where the PHSA was originally conceived as its attached agency. This event aims to deepen public awareness on what the PHSA has achieved through these 40 years with focus on: 1) PHSA’s history and role as the country’s premier high school with arts-focused education; and 2) the legacy of PHSA’s art education programs as evidenced by its alumni.

More importantly, this event is an avenue for Ibarang artists to express their gratitude to their alma mater and the Filipino people for the privilege and honor of having been “iskolar ng bayan” during their years of stay and study at PHSA and the various opportunities which have opened thereafter. This sense of gratitude can be best expressed by Ibarang artists’ sharing with and handing down PHSA’s legacy of art education to the next generation of Filipino budding young artists.

In a press conference held May 25 at the CCP, award-winning poet and PHSA’s current director Dr. Victor Emmanuel Carmelo “Vim” Nadera, Jr. presented the programs lined up in celebration of PHSA’s 40th anniversary year and the Annual Nationwide Search for Young Arts Scholars (ANSYAS). He invited elementary school students from all regions and provinces in the Philippines to apply for admission to the PHSA and later on become artists who will contribute to nation-building.

At the press conference, PHSA alumni from the jubilarian batches shared how PHSA has helped them grow into artists and art educators who are now handing down PHSA’s legacy of art education to the next generation of Filipino young artists. PHSA students and alumni also spoke and rendered performances at the media event.

2017 CINEMALAYA SHORT FEATURE FINALISTS NAMED

"2017 CINEMALAYA SHORT FEATURE FINALISTS NAMED"

THE Cinemalaya Foundation has announced the finalists for the Short Feature Film category for the 2017 Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival and Competition. For the first time in Cinemalaya history, 12 instead of the usual 10 were selected.

The Cinemalaya Selection Committee stated that the entries to the 2017 Short Feature Film category were of high quality. “The Selection Committee strongly feels that the list of entries in this year’s competition merits to include two additional entries added to the traditional list of ten films.”

Subject matter and themes of the finalists are wide-ranging, including children and family, transformation, history and memory, justice and redemption.

The finalists are:

The 12 finalists were selected from a total of 174 entries.

The 12 films will be screened during the 2017 Cinemalaya Film Festival on August 4-13 at the Cultural Center of the Philippines and Ayala Cinemas.

The Best Short Feature Film will receive a prize of Php150,000.00 and the Balanghai trophy during the Cinemalaya Awards Night on August 13, 2017 at the CCP Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (CCP Main Theater).

Cinemalaya is an all-digital film competition that aims to discover, encourage, and support the cinematic works of Filipino filmmakers that boldly articulate and freely interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity. It is a project of the Cinemalaya Foundation, Inc. in partnership with the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP).

"CCP’S PR DIRECTOR RECEIVES AWARD FOR 30-YEAR SERVICE"

THE Cultural Center of the Philippines recently awarded its employee Irene Obligacion-Rada a certificate of recognition for rendering 30 years of continuous and dedicated service to the CCP. As director of the CCP Corporate Communications Division, she oversees the promotion and publicity of CCP projects and programs and its affiliated organizations. Ms. Rada is also the Producer and Host of Culture Carousel, a CCP classical radio program. Aired in 98.7 DZFE-FM, the program features interviews with CCP artists and various foreign artists and their music, scheduled to perform at the Center. Other CCP employees given recognition included Orpheus Basañes, Stemson Nilo, Jose Ortega Jr., Francisco P. Cabuena, Nestor Evangelista, Nestor Natal (30 years), Cecilia Ana Bautista and Alice Esteves for 25 years of service.

A NIGHT TO REMEMBER AT TESSIE LAGMAN'S "SAMA-SAMA, SALO-SALO" RADIO SHOW

It was a night to remember. A very happy night. Coupled-in with smiles, laughter, hugs and kisses. The camaraderie, the sincerity, the friendship.

It was all too evident. There was love and goodwill- plus an all-out transparency of a true dedication to the broadcasting arts.

As he looked around, he saw people with great achievements in the entertainment field. People who became more humble amidst their senior age and vast experiences in life, as the younger ones simply added gloss and colors.

It was that night at the radio program entitled "Sama-Sama, Salo-Salo" of DZRM, at the government-owned radio station inside the building premises of Philippine Information Agency. Hosted by veteran radio icon Tessie Lagman-Balboa, the program was so entertaining, bringing you back to the spirit of true Filipino music via those Kundiman songs being sang by the 4-S barkada of Tita Tessie which includes Tony Suvega, Corazon Garcia, Dolly Cruz Favorito, Reymond Agbada, Sammy Rascal, Cynthia Garcia, Cenen Garcia, Ed Suarez, Nick Corong and Ms. Ray Lucero (formerly of Mabuhay Sngers), plus others more- we simply forgot their names. These music artists were great in experience, style and creativity.

The two guests that night were Richard Merck and Judge Eugene Paras who both delivered two songs for Tita Tessie's wide audience. Richard made everybody laugh-to-death via his great jokes and funny anecdotes. He made the evening so funny and happy. But when he sang- oh, my. His voice and quality of singing never faded. Simply amazing.

Judge Eugene ( a true judge in real life) was also great in singing. He should leave his law profession and just pursue a singing career someday. Why not?

A blogger felt awed when Reymond Agbada sang the song "Buhat", a Kundiman song made popularized by Rico J. Puno and Martin Nievera. But it was originally sang by Diomedes Maturan in 1950's.

When Tita Tessie sang the song "Everlasting Love" at the start of the radio program, the air became more cooler amidst the air-conditioned booth. Because Tita Tessie's voice was so cool, tranquil, soothing.

Sammy Rascal, the "bunso" of 4-S barkada made one blogger cry when she sang "Pusong Ligaw". Her version/cover was simply terrific.

Yes indeed, it was a night to REMEMBER. A night full of love, too.
