jose jeffrey camanag: the director of EL FILIBUSTERISMO for 9 long years |

In one cozy afternoon that a blogger saw the young and almost like "That's Entertainment"-type of cast involved in the play, he simply loved it. It gave him an air of sweetness and hopeful new starts. What more, when he talked to the director of this play (for more than nine years now), the more the blogger felt and the more the blogger loved.
"It was the late Tony Espejo who gave this play a total face-lift", direk Jeffrey started to say. "He was the one who gave this play a new look and transformed it to something light so that the students could appreciate.
"But it's still loyal to JM Fleras' original script", Jeffrey further continued. "If the were any changes, slight lang talaga. When Roobak Valle also directed this play sometime ago, he had to rewrite some scenes. But now, since I started directing it, the play focused more on the conversations of Simoun and Padre Florentino.
"The play centers around the Points of View (POV's) of Simoun and Padre Florentino. It's almost Simoun's own journey seeking absolution from Padre Florentino and everything happens in a flashback", he added.
Direk Jeffrey said that he'll be using again unitized sets and lighted props/portions throughout the play.

"And rhythm is very important this time around", Jeffrey stressed-out. "There will be incidental music and I would want to clarify that they are not songs, but simply music. And also some transition music that will be played before the scene starts and incidentally during scenes to capitalize and motivate the scenes. And I have the great musical scorer, in person of Mr. Jesse Lucas, who's the one doing the musical score of El Filibusterismo this year."
But how could director Jeffrey further on describe this year's EL FILIBUSTERISMO?
"It's a play within a play, that's how best I could describe it", he answered back. "'Yung music na maririnig sa play and the transition of the music, tumutugma lahat sa kilos ng mga characters. And actually, it's a musical play without the SONGS! Only pure music, without songs itself. Instead of dialogues and lyrics, I'm incorporating the rhythm and the movements of the characters in accordance with the music being played."
Pretty wonderful, isn't it? It sounds so exciting to watch this kind of a new formula in a classic play like EL FILIBUSTERISMO.
"I was already directing the touring plays of Gantimpala Theater Foundation when the late Tony Espejo asked me to direct this play in the year 2010", Jeffrey recalled back. "And from thereon, my career as a theater director was never the same again. It was really an honor. Through the late Tony Espejo's guidance, I was taught a lot of things in every little detail of the play EL FILIBUSTERISMO. And this year, I promise to do better!"
When the play KANSER ends, the play EL FILIBUSTERISMO begins. But somehow, people always seem to pound on KANSER for always. Leaving behind the sequel that further enlightens every Filipino's heart and soul.
"No one cares, no one takes actions pa rin", direk Jeffrey said in the end. "The problems we had before in Philippine society is still there. The rain of greed, the hostilities. Philippines is still the same the way it was before."
And definitely, we do agree. Watch EL FILIBUSTERISMO and attest the fact, it's true.
